Ceylon Cinnamon

Cinnamomum Zeylanicum is a tree indigenous to Sri Lanka which produces the highest-grade pure cinnamon.
Sri Lanka is the world's largest producer and exporter of pure cinnamon to the world and pure Ceylon Cinnamon Suppliers from Sri Lanka claim 90% of global market share.
Cinnamon cultivated and produced in Sri Lanka has earned a long-standing reputation in the global market for its exceptional quality, vibrant color, rich flavor, and distinctive aroma. With growing awareness of the health risks associated with synthetic flavoring agents in the food industry, there is an increasing global demand for natural alternatives. Cinnamon is widely used in baked goods, Asian cuisine, and teas for its unique taste and aromatic properties.
Cinnamon is distinctly different from Cassia, both physically and chemically. Known as “sweet cinnamon” or “true cinnamon,” Ceylon Cinnamon is considered far superior to Cassia, which is a cheaper and lower-quality alternative.
What sets Ceylon Cinnamon apart is the unique processing and curing method that enhances its signature flavor. The art of preparing cinnamon quills—characterized by precise lengths and diameters—is a skill that is exclusive to Sri Lanka and has been passed down through generations.
These quills, made exclusively from Ceylon Cinnamon cultivated and manufactured in Sri Lanka, are graded into four main categories: Alba, Continental, Mexican, and Hamburg. These grades are determined based on the diameter of the quills, with Alba—measuring just 6 mm—being the highest and most expensive grade.
In addition to quills, Sri Lanka also exports a wide range of value-added cinnamon products such as oil, powder, and tablets to numerous international markets.
Ceylon Cinnamon is particularly popular in Mexico, the largest importer of true cinnamon, where it is a key ingredient in chocolates. It is also widely used in desserts, spicy candies, teas, hot cocoa, and liqueurs due to its distinctive aroma and flavor—an increasingly preferred choice as consumers seek natural alternatives to synthetic flavoring agents.
Beyond culinary uses, cinnamon plays a significant role in pharmaceuticals and the global cosmetics industry. Its essential oil is highly valued in the production of perfumes, cosmetics, and exotic scented gifts, and its high antioxidant content makes it beneficial for overall health.
The highest-grade cinnamon in the world—Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum)—comes from a plant native to Sri Lanka. Cinnamon from Sri Lanka has earned a lasting reputation in the global market for its exceptional quality, flavor, color, and aroma. The term “Ceylon Cinnamon,” derived from the country’s former name, is now a recognized geographical indication.
Sri Lanka is the world’s leading producer and exporter of cinnamon, accounting for nearly 90% of the global supply. It remains the country’s most valuable and significant spice export.
Today, cinnamon is widely used in food, medicine, and personal care products around the world. To promote and protect this unique spice, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (SLEDB) has successfully established the “Pure Ceylon Cinnamon” brand in the global marketplace.
The primary export markets for Ceylon Cinnamon are the United States, Mexico & Canada, followed by Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Spain, Guatemala, Chile, and Bolivia—all of which import substantial quantities of this renowned spice.

Ceylon Cinnamon Production CycleThe Ceylon Cinnamon production cycle begins with planting saplings in well-drained soil, usually during the rainy season. After 2–3 years of growth, mature stems are harvested by cutting them close to the ground. The outer bark is removed, and the inner bark is delicately peeled and rolled into quills. These are then sun-dried in shaded areas to maintain their aroma and color. Once dried, cinnamon quills are sorted, graded, and trimmed to standard lengths. Finally, the quills are bundled and packed for local markets or export. This meticulous, mostly manual process preserves Ceylon cinnamon’s signature quality, aroma, and fine texture.
